Traditional Rulers Are Nothing, Only God Is The Almighty – Ooni Of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi has urged traditional rulers in the country to promote unity stating that Obas are nothing, according to Daily Trust.

Oba Ogunwusi said this on Thursday when he visited Ekiti for the first time since ascending the throne.

He was accompanied by Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Oyedotun and other traditional rulers in Ife land.

The Ooni said, “I thank God for the opportunity to come here today; we Obas are nothing before the Almighty God because God is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

“It is God who installs kings, he is the King today, tomorrow and forever. I am so happy to have the Orangun to my right and the Alara to my right and we are all going to see the Ajero together.

“Unity has come to Yoruba land, there is nothing like unity. It is my prayer that our youths will be gainfully employed, the barren will be fruitful and when there is unity, there will be development, and things will go well.

“The new era in Yoruba land will bring good things to us, we want our youths to be empowered, businessmen and businesswomen to be prosperous in their businesses. Peace will reign in Aramoko, peace will reign in Ekiti, peace will reign in Yoruba land.”

Response to the EFCC latest statement on chief

Fani Kayode - By Jude NdukweIt is a pity that the spokesman for the EFCC Mr Wilson Uwujaren is determind to try to mislead members of the public concerning the illegal detention of Chief Fani Kayode. He issued a statement today saying the arraignment of Chief Fani Kayode will takeplace on November the 10th and that it was to do with 17 count charges amounting to 4. 6billion naira.

The truth is that the 4. 6 billion naira arraignment took place last July at the Federal high court in Lagos. Chief Fani Kayode was granted bail by that court far back as July and the trial for the case commenced on the 21st of October.

The arraignment for November 10th has nothing to do with 4.6 billion naira or campaign funds and  rather itis the 5 count charge in respect to the allegation that he was given 26 million naira by the NSA office in 2014 for media work for the government. Chief Fani Kayode has denied that this happened and the arraignment has been slated for November the 10th

It is wrong for the EFCC to give the impression that the November10th matter which is in an Abuja Federal high court is the same which is in the federal high court in Lagos. We will recall that Chief Fani Kayode was detained by the EFCC for 73 days before his arraignment before a Federal high court in lagos in July.

Despite that long incarceration and despite that the court now freed him on bail, he was rearrested on the 21st from the court and they intend to keep him in detention until November10th even though he was granted bail by the federal high court.

This is barbaric and it is wrong. They are also aware that he does not enjoy good healthbut they don't care. The EFCC and the court had been given an undertaking through the lawyer that they will produce him in court on November the 10th for the arraignment but despite that,  they arrested him and are determined to keep him in until November the 10theven though he has court bail from the federal high court and is iIl.

Their plan is to keep him in perpetual detention even after the next arraignment and even after he is granted bail by the second federal high court. They intend to continue to do this just to keep him out of circulation and to silence him.

This is wickedness of the highest order and it is unlawful.

It is an abuse of power and such things should not happen in a Democracy where there is rule of law.

UNIZIK Students Protest Against Obiano, Call For The Sack Of His SA On IGR(pics)

Just in:

Unizik Students move against Obiano, blocked the dual carriage way of Enugu/Onitsha express way by Unizik first gate.
...says Willie lied to the them
...calls for the sack of the SA on IGR.

Today, the APGA Interactive Forum reporter at Awka filed a report that the Enugu/Awka expressway was this afternoon blocked by the Students of Unizik and members of the Association of Small Campus Shuttle Buses. The protesters who blocked the expressway kept commuters and travelers stranded for over 4 hours.

Speaking to APGA Interactive Forum the protesters stated that Obiano lied to them when he went on air to announce his Recession stimulus package in which he suspended the daily taxes and levies of campus buses. One of the protesters claimed that while they were rejoicing that Obiano has suspended their daily levy, the SA to the gov on IGR increased the daily fee to 1000 naira and has used their govt taskforce to harass them on daily.

They claimed that the taskforce seized two of their buses and vowed to remain on the road until their buses are returned.

Some security agencies were later sent to the scene to help make way for stranded passengers. It is unfortunate that Obiano announced suspension of taxes on media and went back to even increase the taxes.

We have raised alarm that Obiano "wonderful" performance only exist on media. He has introduced the worst form of govt in Nigeria where democracy dividends are only read on media while nothing is on ground to show for it.

Senate Suspends JAMB 3-Year Validity Plan

The Senate on Wednesday said it has suspended the amendment of the Act establishing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in order to allow for adequate consultation with stakeholders.

The red chamber had approved the extension of the validity of the results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) being conducted by JAMB to three years.

The decision, the senate had said, was granted to reduce the financial burden of the examination on parents, students and JAMB.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary), Senator Aliyu Wamakko, confirmed the suspension to reporters during an oversight visit to the headquarters of JAMB in Abuja.

Wamakko, who was represented by Senator Ajayi Boroffice, stated that the senate would not make any laws that would impede on the progress of any institution.

He said: “Your JAMB result is only valid for one year and we thought it will be better for it to be valid at least for three years. It will reduce the burden on the parents, on the students themselves even on the institution that is conducting the test. I think it is what is good for all of us and I don’t think the public will reject it.

“As I said we don’t make laws for an individual or for the senate. We make law for the country in the interest of all of us. A bill must not necessarily be at the convenience of a particular organization, having said that, since we don’t want to make a law that will impede the progress of any institution we are bound to listen to what they are saying. We are bound to listen to them.”

Responding, JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, said he was happy the senate listened to its appeal to suspend the amendment of its Act.

I don't believe Dasuki stole $2.2 billion' - Former president Jonathan

While responding to questions after his lecture at Oxford University yesterday, Former President Goodluck Jonathan, said he does not believe Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, can "steal"$2.2 billion as he is being accused of by the EFCC. Responding to a question on Dasuki, Jonathan said

“They said the National Security Adviser stole$2.2billion. I don’t believe somebody can just steal$2.2 billion. We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army and so on andso forth and you are still saying 2.2 billion, so where did we get the money to buy all those things?

Yes, there were some issues. Yes, there are still corruption issues but some of it were over blown. I’d say exaggerated and they give a very bad impression about our nation. You cannot say the national security adviser stole $2.2billion. It is not just possible”.

Dasuki was arrested last year and has been in detention since. He is to be re-arraigned in court on November 16th.

Jonathan also stated that after he signed the anti-same sex marriage law in January 2014, no Nigerian has been discriminated.

Buhari’s nominee for NERC chairman reportedly turns down offer, says he wasn't consulted

President Buhari's nominee for chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Prof. Akintunde Akinwande, has reportedly turned down his nomination. Akinwande who was billed to appear before the senate for screening and confirmation yesterday, failed to show up.

A source who spoke to the Nation said Akinwande turned down the nomination “because he was not consulted before the nomination was made”.

The source added that he was currently working on a project at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US and is not likely to take a break from the project. Akinwande was the only nominee absent at the screening of nominees for the board of the NERC.

“We also learnt that enough consultation was not made before the man was nominated. We were informed that the nominee may have turned down his nomination,” the source said. Addressing the press after the suspension of the screening exercise, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe said there was no way the senate can conduct any screening without that of the chairman-designate.

“Regrettably, when members of the committee assembled to screen the nominees made by President Muhammadu Buhari, we were told that the chairman designate was unavoidably absent. The Presidential liaison who brought the nominees informed us that the chairman was unavoidably absent. The commission is vital and cannot function without a chairman. We cannot screen them until we have a formal communication from the Presidency”. Other nominees for the board appointment included Sanusi Garuba (Vice Chairman), Nathan R. Shatti (commissioner), Dr. Moses Arigu (commissioner), Dafe C. Akpeneye (commissioner), Prof. Frank Okafor(commissioner) and Musiliu O. Oseni(commissioner).

Oba Of Benin, Ewuare, Punishes Family For Organising Burial Despite Ban .

Family incurs Oba’s wrath by organizing burial ceremony

For organizing the burial ceremony of their father, the family of Uhumwangho from Isi village in Uhunmwode local government area of Edo State has incurred the wrath of the new Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare 11.

Before the coronation ceremonies of the new Oba, the palace had placed a ban on burial activities in the Benin kingdom till further notice.

It was gathered at the weekend that all was set for the burial ceremonies at Iguodala Primary school in Benin City when chiefs from the Oba’s palace stormed the area and tied ‘Umehe’ leaves on the food, drinks and canopies.

The ‘Umenhe’ leaves, Daily Trust learnt, is a message of no trespass from the Oba.

Some of the family members were arrested and taken to the palace while the musician hired to provide entertainment was also dragged to the palace.

A palace source told our reporter that the family was asked to buy some sacrificial items to cleanse the land.

Our reporter who visited the venue of the burial ceremonies, observed that food and drinks were on the table which the family members said nobody would touch because of the sacred leaves tied to them.

One of the arrested family members Josephine Ehimwenma said they were told by some chiefs at the palace to go on with the burial arrangements since the actual coronation had been done, but a member of the Iwebo Palace society, Chief Sunday Okhiokpamwonyi, said the family would pay some fine and postpone the burial.

We Fought Corruption Without Making Noise – jonathan

FORMER President Goodluck Jonathan has said that his administration fought corruption in the country without making noise about it.

Mr. Jonathan said this on Monday while speaking at the Oxford Union of the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

The immediate past Nigerian leader spoke on the theme “Promoting Youth Entrepreneurship”.

Responding to inquiries by some of the students regarding his administration’s fight against corruption, Mr. Jonathan said he would not like to “interfere with the legal processes” because “several matters are pending in court”.

Mr. Jonathan however said he did enough to reform anti-corruption agencies to enable them function effectively.

“We reformed the institutions and introduced various mechanisms to stop the corruption problems in our country without publicity,” he said.

Mr. Jonathan lost his bid for a second term in 2015.

Using his Twitter handle, the former president paid glowing tributes to Nigerian youth and said “any Nation that does not spend its wealth and resources to develop the capacity of its youth, will be forced to use them to fight insecurity.

“As a leader, you can decide through your policies to educate the youth, or face the consequences of failing to do so,” he said.

Mr. Jonathan also said his administration put in place some youth related policies, which, he said, helped grow the Nigerian economy.

“Despite incredible challenges, Nigerian youths are achieving great things and placing Nigeria positively in the world map. They inspire us,” he said.

He also said his administration increased the allowances due to Youth Corps members by more than 100% in 2011.

Mr. Jonathan added that the PDP administration that he led “identified Nollywood as a sector that can employ many young people and provided a grant of $200 million to boost the industry”.

“As a result, Nollywood became a major contributor to our GDP and in 2014, the industry contributed 1.4% to our GDP,” he said.

“We may not have been perfect, but we did our best, and our best yielded an era of unprecedented economic growth for Nigeria. A growth that proved the truism that a Nation’s wealth is not underneath the ground but between the ears of her people.

“Under my watch, Nigeria was projected by CNN Money to be the third fastest growing economy in the world for the year 2015.

“While serving as President of Nigeria, I worked for the next generation and not for the next elections. I have no regrets for what I did,”Mr. Jonathan said.

The former president also called on contemporary African leaders to see youth entrepreneurship as a collective project transcending national boundaries.

"I once said that I was not elected President of Nigeria to spread poverty, I was elected to generate and spread wealth-Former Pres. Goodluck Jonathan

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan Monday spoke at the Oxford Union, succeeding US Secretary of State, John Kerry, who spoke at the same event in May this year.

Speaking on the theme 'Fostering Youth Entrepreneurship, Dr. Jonathan, whose speech was streamed live, said:"I once said that I was not elected President of Nigeria to spread poverty, I was elected to generate and spread wealth." 'My belief in this regard is that getting a job or being a worker cannot completely curethe disease of poverty. It is only your own business that can provide such security and give you the financial freedom you need to prosper.

"Dr. Jonathan asked the esteemed audience some questions during his speech which included;"Why are some nations rich and some poor? Why do individuals that grow up in similar circumstances end up differently, with some as successes and others as failures? Is the wealth of nations a result of geography, weather, culture, destiny, etc.?What could a leader do to effectively lift a people out of the depths of poverty, and enable them to achieve prosperity?

"The former Nigerian leader talked about youth entrepreneurship programs his administration pioneered saying that one of them, YouWIN was a major plank of his job creation efforts.

"The motivation for this program is for young people togo into SMEs, create jobs for other young people with the expectation that some would grow to large scale businesses" Dr. Jonathan said.

The former President concluded his speech by giving a short brief of his achievements in the economic sphere, saying:"Under my watch, Nigeria was projected by CNN Money to be the third fastest growing economy in the world for the year 2015 and rated as the largest economy in Africa and the 23rd largest in the world by the World Bank and the IMF, with a GDP above half a Trillion US dollars.

"The speech was streamed live via Dr. Jonathan's Facebook page and will be hosted on the Oxford Union's site.Previous speakers at the Oxford Union include the lateKing of Pop, Michael Jackson, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, author of 48 laws of power, Robert Greene, the Dalai Lama, former British prime ministers Winston Churchill, Edward Heath, MargaretThatcher and John Major, Mother Teresa and former US presidents Richard Nixon (November 1978), Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton.

Jose Mourinho: It's hard for Wayne Rooney, but i'll never sell him, it'll never go to that point.

Head coach of Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has revealed he'll never ever sell England/Man U captain Wayne Rooney despite his long stretch of poorform for club and country. Rooney, England's highest goal scorer and Manchester United's second highest goal scorer of all time has been dropped by club and country due to his poor form and sloppiness during matches, but Mourinho who has kept him on the benchin his last 3 premier league matches says he'll never sell his captain, as rumours surfaced that United will be looking to offload him as soon as this summer.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Mourinho was asked about the possible prospect of selling Rooney, 30, to which he replied emphatically.

“No, never. I will never make that decision. A player of his stature, a player of his history in the club will never go to point where club or manager want to makethat decision for him.

“I put him [Rooney] on the bench for three matches in a row. That is hard for him, hard for me, so that is being ruthless, to put in my mind the interests of the team in front of the player, prestige, status. In this case even legend. To put on bench a player with the numbers he has for club and country is hard.”

JAMB To Stop Setting Uniform Cut-off Mark For Universities, Polytechnics And COE's

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Is-haq Oloyede, has stated that the board is working with the Federal Government to achieve the needed change in the education sector through its policy reforms.

According to a statement made by the JAMB boss through the board’s Head, Media and Information, Fabian Benjamin, one of such reforms it carried out recently was the cancellation of the use of scratch cards as part of its examination process.

The statement added that Mr. Oloyede has called for a national debate on the issue of standard cut-off marks for institutions; stating that institutions should be allowed to determine the kind of candidates they wanted .

In his opinion, making the cut-off mark uniform for universities, polytechnics and Colleges of education does not make sense since universities admits for degrees, polytechnics for Diplomas and Colleges of education for NCE

He said this has hindered polytechnics and colleges of education form admitting candidates they ought to have admitted.

After Secret Talks: Buhari Takes Steps To End Feud With Tinubu.

The prolonged cold war between President Muhammadu Buhari and his erstwhile close political associate and South-West political strongman, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, may soon come to an end.

Reliable sources within the party told SUNDAY PUNCH during the week that the two sides began planning to bury the hatchet during a recent meeting that President Buhari held with some of Tinubu’s loyalists in Aso Rock.

The President had met with the trio of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, former Osun governor, Chief Bisi Akande, and Senator Olusola Adeyeye last week Sunday. The sources also said both parties agreed that the President needed to take some confidence-boosting measures to restore Tinubu’s faith in him.

The two men reportedly fell out following what Tinubu and his loyalists saw as attempts to diminish his contributions to President Buhari’s victory at the 2015 poll and erode his political capital in his South-West base. Some supporters of the former governor had also complained that the President rejected Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, and worked against the ex-Lagos governor’s candidates in the Kogi elections and Ondo governorship primary, among other ills.
A reliable source who was privy to the events that culminated in the meeting said its seeds were planted during President Buhari’s three-day state visit to Germany. Prior to that time, Buhari and Tinubu had not had any private communication in a while. But the source said the President contacted Akande, who is one of Tinubu’s closest associates and a former Interim Chairman of the APC, asking him to see him in Aso Rock.

The President’s call reportedly came barely 48 hours after the controversial interview the President’s wife, Aisha, granted the British Broadcasting Corporation . In the interview which went viral, the president’s wife accused her husband of neglecting those who helped him to power in 2015. Mrs. Buhari also threatened not to support her husband in 2019 if the President did not change tack.

Sources said although both men’s relationship began to sour almost as soon as Buhari won the election, it deteriorated when Professor John Paden, in his book titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: Challenges of Leadership,’ claimed that Tinubu was against the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Vice President. Both Buhari and Tinubu were present at the book launch.
Insiders say this did not go down well with Tinubu and his men, as the All Progressives Congress national leader’s camp saw it as yet another attempt by the President and his men to reduce his contributions to the emergence of the APC government and also rewrite history.
Shortly after, Tinubu in a scathing open letter asked the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to step down, after alleging that the chairman doctored results of the Ondo State APC governorship primary. Odigie-Oyegun, a former Edo State governor, who had been cautious in his initial response to Tinubu’s letter, paid a visit to Buhari in Aso Rock and thereafter launched an attack on Tinubu, describing his letter as ‘reckless.’

Seeing that he was fast losing at the centre, the APC chieftain, popularly known as the Jagaban (of Borgu), started reaching out to his political foes in the South-West in order to consolidate his influence in the region. With several meetings held, Tinubu’s most vocal critics such as Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Sir Olanihun Ajayi, among others, began to drum up support for him publicly.
A source in the presidency told our correspondent that Akande, who cut short his trip abroad to see the President, did not mince words during the meeting.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Akande told Buhari that despite the roles Tinubu and the South-West played in making him President, he had relegated the APC national leader and the region.

The source said, “Baba Akande told the President that they were not happy with him. He told Buhari that apart from not giving Tinubu sufficient consideration during the ministerial appointments, everything that played out in the Kogi and Ondo elections showed that the President was supporting Asiwaju’s enemies.
“Baba also said Paden’s book was a major slight and that they believed the President was aware of the content of the book before it went public. He further said some of the people around Buhari were hell-bent on ensuring that the President and Tinubu became enemies because of what they would gain from the crisis.”
The source stated that Buhari countered that he was unhappy with the acrimony in the ruling party and that he had tried to be fair to all parties. But Akande was said to have disagreed with the President in his response, and cited further examples.

SUNDAY PUNCH further gathered that Akande told the President to take practical steps to show that he was not fighting Tinubu and the South-West. While listing their demands, Akande and others told him that they needed to see more representation of those that helped him to power during the next cabinet reshuffle.
There have been reports that a cabinet change is imminent.
Akande, who travelled abroad after the meeting with Buhari, could not be reached for comments, but a top APC member close to him confirmed details of the meeting, saying, “They want Buhari to accept Tinubu’s list when he makes changes in his cabinet. They specifically told him that they are only in support of one of the South-West ministers in his cabinet. They also asked him to get the party leadership to hold the National Executive Council meetings regularly while also facilitating the constitution of the party’s board of trustees.”
A source close to the South-West leadership of the party disclosed to one of our correspondents that Akande and Aregbesola had met at the former’s residence in Ila-Orangun two Wednesdays ago before meeting the President.
Akande had been honoured by the Catholic Diocese in Otan-Ayegbaju, Osun State, where a school was inaugurated in his name. The late mother of a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, who hailed from Otan-Ayegbaju, was also honoured by the church, which inaugurated a multipurpose hall in her honour.
APC leaders, members and supporters, including Aregbesola, who thronged the venue of the ceremony, accompanied Akande to Ila-Orangun as a mark of respect.
It was gathered that Aregbesola and Akande held a meeting at Akande’s residence, where they discussed the face-off between Buhari and Tinubu.
The source said, “We were at Otan-Ayegbaji together. We later accompanied Baba Akande to Ila-Orangun after the Otan-Ayegbaju ceremony. When we got to Ila-Orangun, both the governor and Baba Akande went inside for a very long time. I’m sure that was where the decision to intervene in the matter was taken.
“When they met Buhari, they complained about the marginalisation of Tinubu’s men. At the meeting, Aregbesola said they (Tinubu loyalists) were not out to fight Buhari, but that the President should consider the Tinubu group in terms of appointments.
“Buhari told them that he was not out to undermine Tinubu’s group and that things would change in the coming days.”
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in an interview with one of our correspondents, said he was not aware of what transpired during the meeting between the President and the APC chieftains.
He said, “I am not aware of what was discussed with the President in the said meeting. As a matter of fact, it is not the nature of the President to disclose what people discuss with him in confidence during meetings.”

Why Oba Of Benin Was Covering His Mouth.

Yesterday, Oba Ewuare ll N'Ogidigan ascended the revered throne of his ancestors to become the 40th Oba of Benin, succeeding his late father, Omo n’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Erediauwa.

The photo below of the newly coronated Oba puzzled many people.

Why was the Oba covering his mouth? It was obviously a cultural act but what was the significance? Even his wives covered their mouths.

I did some investigation and found out the following:

The Oba usually covers his mouth because when he talks he is the supreme authority. Whatever he says is final.

People talk on his behalf most of the time and whatever they proclaim becomes the Law with immediate effect.

A friend of mine who is a painter said he did a painting of the old Oba and it was rejected because it depicted him smiling. According to tradition, people are not supposed to see the Oba's teeth so he doesn't smile.

His wives covered their mouths as a sign of submission.

Don't you just love our culture? So rich and varied!

If I have any fact wrong, please clarify.

Oba atokpei, iseeeeeee!!!

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old lady, Abosede Omolare, for allegedly stabbing her fiance, Sadiq Dauda, to death during an argument.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, told a news conference on Friday in Abeokuta that Omolare was engaged to marry Dauda in December.

He said that the suspect committed the crime at Onirugba St. in Ijebu-Ode on Tuesday and was arrested on the same day.

The PPRO explained that the incident followed minor disagreement over allegation of mismanagement of funds from the gas business which the late Dauda entrusted to the suspect.

Oyeyemi said Oyelare claimed that her late fiancé, who she was living with, beat her up and sent her away.

He said that Oyelare returned home on the invitation of her fiance’s mother who promised to intervene.

He said “She stated that immediately she got home, her fiance descend on her, beat her mercilessly and broke a bottle with which he threatened to stab her.
“She admitted that it was then she took a kitchen knife and stabbed him on the rib.”

Oyeyemi said that Dauda, who was bleeding profusely, was carried to Igbeba Divisional Police Post in Ijebu-Ode.

He added that policemen rushed him to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital where he died on Wednesday.

The PPRO said the case had been transferred to the Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department for further investigation.
